Best/Craziest Notary Story
Did a signing for two clients who didn't like each other. You could see the tension in the air. One would say something and the other would mutter something else and that would start an arguement. I couldn't wait to get out and breathe some fresh air!
I'm afraid to...anyway, seeing yor pic reminds me that our mother must have looked like Betty Boop!
Guess now, I'll have to find a pic to upload. Also thanks for the info, I had a feeling you were in the industry before.Just trying to get away from sooo many signing companies. I would just like to get a little more biz....not too much...just a little more...but there are just too many notaries here in So. Calif....and it's Calif....not cali!...Geez...didn't our mom learn you no better? lol
"Hey, Deb, how did you market yourself when you started? Did you already have an " in" or did you go in cold turkey? That's a little different than wild turkey!..and probably doesn't hurt your head as much the next morning!"
I was lucky when I left the signing company I managed for. One of the clients I brought in followed me.
I also called up some of the LO's that always requested me when I was with the other company. However, I only called them after they had moved on to a new mortgage company. I ended up picking up a decent number of closing that were big $$. LO's talk even when they go their separate ways.
Having started out in this business dealing directly with the lender, I learned to highlight my strengths to any LO I encounter either in person or on the phone. I've picked up a couple of out state clients simply by talking to the LO after I closed their loan.
LO's can be a pain and some need much too much hand holding but the big $$ are with them.
Being requested is always my end goal. Much more weight if it's the LO requesting. Word of mouth is and always will be my best friend!
If you do a good job and try to be helpful to the title companies, they will use you. One closer actually called me when she switched title companies and brought me in to meet her boss.
Beyond that, I signed up with the NNA/NSA, NR, GoMobile, and some other free directories. I never got any work from any of these but the NSA.
I perused thru the forums and chose some nationwide companies to sign up with, maybe 20. NREIS became my largest client within a month, 60-75 closings per month. Unfortunately, they dropped their fees so I cut back my service area for them. I still do quite a bit and I am requested quite often by some of the CW staff.
I try to network at every opportunity I can. I engage people in conversations and eventually the fact that I am self employed comes out. People are always fascinated by self employment. It's a sign of freedom. Next thing you know they are rattling off who they know in the business and I quickly put my card in their hands.
I also ask people for their cards so that I can pass them out if the opportunity presents itself. Think about it...appraisers, realtors, bankers, insurance agents, business owners, accountants, and construction people are just some that I have come across. All of them know someone in the mortgage business and everyone of them salivate at the thought of one more person willing to pass out their business card to a potential client. I'm more than willing to reciprocate!
Cold calling is not my thing. I absolutely hate it! However, I have done it on occasion but not in person. I've called 2-3 title companies and inquired about getting on their list. Overall, I've done ok in that arena. They like the fact that I carry $500,000 E O and that I'm a dual notary. Now I'm also a licensed MN Closing Agent so that has been an added plus.
So smile all the time, keep humor in the mix, be presentable when in public, and ALWAYS ALWAYS carry your business cards, and cell phone even if it's only a run to the video store! Our potential clients go there too!
Hey Teresa, of course, be glad to have you as a friend...you can never have enough!
I bet Lindsey is a doll! Are you kidding me? She would never forget her grandma! That's a great idea thiough. Sometimes I get that feeling with my grandson, Garrett. He comes into the house and whizzes right by me, " Where's grandma?" HELLO, what am I, a ghost? They have a special bond. Great to hear from you, talk to you soon.
I just sent you a request to be my friend. Aren't those grandkids just unbelievable. I started my granddaughter (Lindsey age 6) a candle business in December. Figured if I left her something after I'm dead and gone, she may not forget me. haha
