Best/Craziest Notary Story
I have alot of stories under my belt, some crazy, some sad, but I guess the best one was my very first closing............
I got the call while I was with another SA learning the process of a signing. I was a nurse for 11 years and in nursing, it was always see one, do one, teach one.....so I thought I might as well jump in and do it. Not really knowing about printers, I accepted edocs. Now I'm very computer literate, but my inkjet printer will tell you something different! The signing was for 6pm. I rec'd edocs at 4:30. The signing was about 25 mins from me, so I thought, I'm golden here. As my inkjet is moaning along on page 42 of 150 pages at 5:45pm I'm getting alittle concerned. I called the bo to say I would be alittle late.....The weather was miserable out, rain, wind.......and the bo wife said he wouldn't be home till 8ish. So the docs are finally printed and I stopped at Staple to copy them! I get into town and go by the directions the wife gave me. In the pouring rain, I find my address (lol, yeah right), get out of the car with my umbrella, grab my docs and head up a dark stone stairway, in heels, to the unlit front porch. Ring the bell, and the dog barks. A lady opens the door, the dog comes barrelling out, gets tangled in my umbrella and twists it up and knocks my papers out of my arms! After collecting myself I say......'Hi, Mrs. J......I'm Annette', she says 'No, I'm not Mrs. J....' Yup, you got it.......it was the wrong house! It was Jena Blvd, not Jena Rd!!!! Back through the rain, down the crickety steps.....in heels....no umbrella.........but I'm still not late! So I find the road and the right house. The 'gentleman' was still not home. There was a problem with the bus he was on from the train station. So I'm thinking, he rides the bus to the train? Any bells going off? !!!! At 9:30ish he finally comes in. Ok, now we can start, 'May I see your ID?' 'I don't have a DL,' he replies. OK, what do you have, maybe a passport? He gives me a very weathered SSCard and a passport from when he was 16! You've got to be kidding me I'm thinking. The guys is like 49!!! So.......his mother is there from some other country and she has ID and the title company will allow me to use her as a Credible Witness. Finally, we are into the documents and he needs to leave the table for a cigarette. So I wait.....we get back into the docs and come to the APR! I can only imagine how many times this has been an issue for other notaries because I can't even count how many times I've sat at the signing table trying to explain the difference. Call the title company and she says, 'don't you know the difference and how to explain it?' Now I'm ready to cry and scratch out this girls eyes all at the same time. I'm thinking, 'No one is going to believe that this really happened to me.' How can you make this much up? So.......after long talks with Title, unsuccessful attempts to reach his LO, he finally decided he didn't want to sign the documents. I arrived home at 11:45pm, from a 6pm closing, with unsigned documents, to a very needed tall glass of wine!! I did get paid for the closing, but it took 3 months to get the check!
Really, I look back on it and remember saying, 'if I can make through that, then bring it on' I learned multiple lessons that night, the first 3 were: I bought a Laser printer the next day. I always use Mapquest or Yahoo to back up bo directions. Always check that they have unexpired photo ID before I set out.
Hope you enjoyed my horror story!
